ETBU Players Honored

A couple of East Texas Baptist University basketball players are rewarded for their strong play last week.
Senior forward Chris Isom of was named the American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week. The guard scored 29 points with 17 rebounds in the Tigers’ 80-77 overtime win over Louisiana College Thursday night. All 29 points came in the final 34 minutes of the contest, which enabled ETBU to stay clinging to life in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot from the ASC East. Isom came back on Saturday to score 17 points with 10 rebounds in ETBU’s loss to 4th-ranked Mississippi College.
Sophomore forward Mary Slaughter was named American Southwest Conference East Division Co-Player of the Week with Texas-Dallas’ Ericka Baker. Slaughter, a 6-0 forward from Athens, La., averaged 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds last week as the Lady Tigers (18-4, 14-3 ASC) creep closer to their first outright ASC East Division championship since the 1999-2000 season. Slaughter, who was last season’s ASC East Freshman of the Year, scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds in ETBU’s 85-72 win over Mississippi College on Saturday to help ETBU clinch the top seed from the ASC East in the conference tournament later this month. On Thursday in a win over Louisiana College, Slaughter scored 16 points in just 26 minutes to go along with nine boards.
